shine pet photos on the cover of tails.

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Remember this weekend, when I shot all over Los Angeles with 3 different doggie models?

Well the June issue of Tails Magazine has finally hit your local community:

This is a wonderful free magazine, full of great articles, pet care tips, interviews, and more. And I also love that they support dog and cat rescues. The publication is available in 14 cities across the US (including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, and Philly) and can be found at “pet-related businesses and vet offices, grocery stores, health clubs, book stores, coffee shops, restaurants, libraries, park districts, and other “mainstream” locations.”

Thanks Tails for this great opportunity, and to K. and Mochi for letting me drag you all over the place for our photoshoot!.

It was a whopping 96 degrees in Burbank this weekend. And guess who was the lucky gal who got to do a photoshoot in such sweltering heat?

I didn’t mind though. Because I had the chance to photograph the sweetest, cutest dogs. Mochi is a one year old Corgi (who you may remember was a contender for the Tails magazine cover shoot I did) and Chibi is a 7 year old Corgi mix. Both were a pleasure to photograph, and were such troopers! Here’s a little sneak peek of our session. (Click on photos to enlarge)

I’ve been collecting vintage pet photos at flea markets over the last several months. Some of my friends think it’s incredibly creepy that I buy old photos of people I never knew (and who have probably passed on by now). But I think it’s FASCINATING. I’ve collected photos from the 1940’s to the 1980’s, and they all demonstrate how timeless the relationships between domestic pets and people are.

I FINALLY got a scanner today so I can start posting these awesome photos up on my blog. I especially love the photos that have dates and descriptions on the back. I think it would be really cool if someday, people found my own pet photography interesting enough to choose them out of dusty piles of photos at a flea market.

This one’s a funny one: (Click to enlarge)

Sometimes you can get really awesome photos by accident.

I was taking photos of Obie today, a gorgeous Akita that’s available for adoption from Pawd Squad.

It was unbearably hot outside — so can you imagine how hot Obie must have been? He was drooling and shedding everywhere. He suddenly started to do the doggie shake, and I pressed the shutter not really expecting to get a shot. And this is the photo I got. I wish it had a little more “shaking” action in it but the flying fur, slobber, and bewildered expression are priceless! (Click to enlarge)

art for myself.

I’m constantly getting desk and wall prints made for clients, yet have never printed any for myself. It’s so long overdue, but I finally ordered some 10×10 prints for myself tonight. I can’t wait to hang these in my little Shine Pet Photos studio space! The hard part was choosing which photos to get printed. I’m planning on hanging these in glass clip frames. But what might be cool is to hang them from a wire with clips (kind of like this, but simplified) so I can have my own little rotating gallery of images.

Living in the digital age, it’s so easy to keep photos archived on computers and hard drives. But they’re so much better when they’re printed and living in a nice album or hanging on your wall, don’t you think?

By the way, that living room above is not my own. It’s just a little photoshop comp because my own apartment is not nearly as nice and clean!
