getting to know you.
February 19th, 2009
Hey all you blog readers out there. You all kind of know about me, but I don’t really know about a lot of you. (Especially those who have never commented before!)
So let’s get to know each other a little better. Shoot me a comment and say hey - tell me where you’re from, your pet’s name(s), and any fun, quirky fact about yourself (perhaps one pulled from the “25 random facts” list you already wrote on Facebook?). The more weird and random, the better. I love strange facts.
I’ll randomly pick someone to receive a copy of “PhoDOGraphy” by Kim Levin and the latest issue of Popular Photography. I received 2 of the same issue this month and would love to give it a good home!
UPDATE:
O-M-G! All your random facts are freaking weird and hilarious and just plain delightful! Forget randomly giving the book + magazine away — it’s going to the fact I deem my favorite!

My parents have a bichon frise named Bijou that I borrow as often as I can. My fun fact is that I am a CPA but I pay someone else to do my taxes, haha. I really enjoy reading your blog : )

Um, weird fact… I was an only child for 17 years!
February 19th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Hi Grace!
It’s been fun keeping up with your blog. I’m Amanda from Windsor, CT and I have an almost three year old yellow lab. I’ve been a photographer for two years but somewhere between starting the business and now wedding photography got in the way of my first love…dog photography. I’m working on changing that! Keep up the awesome shots!
February 19th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
I’m Julie from Alexandria, VA and I have an almost 4 yr old german shepherd named Roxy who blows her hot breath in my face every morning for a walk and an adopted kitty named Bob, whose quite the dude around here and cries every time his bowl is half empty.
I pulled my weird facts from my random 25: I’m deathly afraid of tape worms and I like to make up new songs everyday about my dog and sing them to her.
Thank you for the inspiration, keep on keepin’ on.
February 19th, 2009 at 6:11 pm

Weird fact. Hmmm. I never do those Facebook things. Ok. I have an aversion to orange food… I can’t eat anything orange. Except oranges. I’m odd… =)

February 19th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
Yo! I’m Li from Boston. I have two rescue cats name VanBuren and Baxter. They’re brothers, and they won’t let me have a dog. My weird fact is that I won’t eat anything that has seeds in them.
February 19th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
Hey! I live in exciting Fresno, CA with my two puppies Pepper and Dusty and my kitty Belle. Here’s number 22 on my facebook random 25 things list. I just recently became a fan of yours on there too! Yay! You rock!
22. On Christmas day when I was about 7, my sisters, mom, and I were on our way to visit my dad in prison in Arizona and we ran over a dead guy on the freeway. We didn’t make it to visiting hours so instead watched Sister Act II in the theater.
February 19th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
I’m Amanda from Lubbock, TX. I have two rez dogs, Kodiak and Nizhoni. my random fact is that when i like a song, i will listen to it over and over and over repeatedly. for days. much to the annoyance of my husband.

Brad here from DFW area in Texas.. I have a JRT named MacDougal who is fat and stubborn and a chocolate lab mix named Olivia who is absolutely scared to death of cameras (I just have to pick it up and she hides). We also have 3 cats, but they more own us than the other way around. LOL
I don’t remember where I originally saw your blog, but I have found it very inspiring.. and keep thinking I’d like to do what you do.
Weird fact? I think I’m the only male to respond. LOL
February 19th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Stacy from Cincinnati. We have a red tri Aussie named Dorie. A weird fact may be that my dog got her name because she was born in March, making her a Pieces. The only female “fish” we could come up with was Dory from Finding Nemo.
February 19th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
I’m Nick allll the way here in Singapore
I think you sorta know me a little but lets pull out a random fact. Since this blog is somewhat dog related:
1.I’ve eaten plenty of dog treats before. Dried cows stomach was the best.
And for something totally random:
2. I can do http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Rraptor/04102005.jpg
Keep up the work
Always enjoy dropping by your blog.

Hi Grace! I’m Mary and I live in Northeast Ohio with my two dogs, Katy and Ellie. I also have a cat who doesn’t get nearly enough face time. Her name is Frances.
Two random things about me. Like others I sing to my dogs. Favorites are old Steely Dan songs and Monkees songs (Imagine you and me! It has to be!).
I also used to work with large marine mammals. If you want to know I can tell you the best way to wake up a walrus who thinks it’s okay to sleep in on a Sunday morning!
February 19th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
I already introduced myself but I was in such a rush I didn’t post a fact! So, a Weird fact….hmmm lets see.
Well I used to have the most awesome mix ever. =) A Rottweiler/Dachshund! He was adorable. And hmmm…I do have one talent. You know how frogs can make their throat puff out? I can do that too….haha, my friends all call me a frog!
February 19th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
Just like this frog at the beginning! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fjr3A_kfspM

Hi! I’m a new follower of your blog! Picked up your card at the El Segundo dog park (love the fliers/cards by the way). I own a dog walking business in MB. My strange fact? Well, when I was a kid I was MAJORLY allergic to dogs & cats. It was so sad, I would pet them & then be stuck sneezing for hours…. Luckily, my love for animals helped me overcome the allergy & eventually outgrew it!
February 20th, 2009 at 5:26 am
Hi Grace,
Just love your blog !!! I am a photographer and love nature and landscapes photography but my passion is pet photography which was inspired by my beautiful girl Midnight a Black lab mixed with a Jack Russell.
Weird fact or should I say funny fact… One day as a teenager I was late picking up my little sister from school so I was running for the public bus and as I stepped on the step I literally fell underneath the bus.. the bus driver and everyone on the bus plus everyone standing on the sidewalk were trying so hard not to laugh I popped myself from underneath told everyone it was okay to laugh and sat the whole trip feeling very small and embarrassed.
February 20th, 2009 at 5:28 am
Oops Grace sorry I forgot to mention where I am from….
I live in North Carolina.
February 20th, 2009 at 5:56 am
what a fun idea, grace!!
i’m claire, i live in denver w/ my (very) patient boyfriend, alex, and our two ridgebacks roux + mckinley.
and probably the weirdest fact it that i have had SEVEN pairs of front teeth - soon to be eight. i broke my two front teeth several years ago and had to have them crowned. through a combination of bad luck/bad dentistry i’ve had to have them redone WAAAY too many times. i think i can see the light at the end of the tunnel now, and i’m pretty immune when it comes to dental work, AND best part is i can say i’ve had eight pairs of front teeth, which is both freaky + sort of entertaining. and very, very weird.
February 20th, 2009 at 6:29 am
So fun! I’m Janie, from Indianapolis. I have two mutts, Crosley and Larkin and a cat named Penny Lane.
I don’t think I can beat Tricia’s random fact, that is just ridiculous! But my random fact is that I’ve thrown up in Chris Kattan’s sink…I had an internship at SNL in college
February 20th, 2009 at 7:05 am
Hi Grace
I’ve commented on your blog before…i love your work, and your work shows that you love what you do! Anyway…my name is Els, and i live in Charleston SC with our 4-year-old yellow lab “puppy” Cooper. I take photos of him whenever and wherever i can. Thanks for your recent “tips” blog…i can use more of those whenever you feel like sharing again!
My totally random fact taken from my FB 25: I once rolled a 6, seven times in a row, with a die. I was only aiming to roll six 6’s in a row, but tried for another once i hit 6. Bingo! That’s called being REALLY bored (and determined?) for about 5 hours when you are twelve years old.
Cheers!
February 20th, 2009 at 7:07 am
Hi Grace, I LOVE your work. I usually never post comments, but I always love the photos.
I got hit by a car when i was about ten, it was dark out, i had no bike lights, i was dressed in camo and had an 8 foot bullwhip carefully wrapped around my handlebars because i WAS Indiana Jones. So I flew over the yellow volvo and landed in the middle of the street. When I came to, I got up and limped over to the guy who hit me…. and he looked EXACTLY like the guy who played Steve Rhodes from television’s “married with children”. Weird.
I was also an assistant special effects artist on the world’s worst vampire movie that is now a cult hit in japan called “Darkness”. Guess how much cash i get from that. yeah. that’s right… Nada.
I also like cheese.
Keep up the awesome work!
Sincerely Kevin B from Wichita, KS

Karen from Waterloo, ON, Canada. I have a 2 1/2 yr old Black Lab mix named Bauer (we watched too much 24 on DVD the year we got him)
My randow fact is that the tip of both my pinky fingers bend out at a 45 degree angle. It’s genetic, my Dad has the same thing. When people notice they are either intrigued or grossed out by it. I should mention that it bends towards the other fingers, not away from (that would be weird!) I think it’s cute that my pinky finger wants to cuddle with my ring finger.

Hi Grace,
Marissa here from New Jersey originally but recently relocated to Minneapolis. I have a 5 year old tan and white beagle named Lemon. She’s a shelter dog from WV - we adopted her from the Olive Branch Animal Shelter in Sistersville, WV, a no-kill shelter built on a gorgeous hilltop and full of beautiful animals needing homes.
I’ve been reading your blog for awhile now but have never commented before. I love your photography - you really capture each animal’s personality. Great work!
My random fact is that I have seen the musical Chicago well over 20 times (I stopped counting at 20) and have slept overnight on 44th Street in NYC more than once waiting for tickets. For about a year my friend and I were known by the cast and crew and even hit with a spotlight once during intermission.
February 20th, 2009 at 9:36 am
Liz from Ottawa, Ontario. My pups are Paddington the Morkie and Corduroy the Malshi.
Random fact: yesterday i ate 10 Fudgeo cookies in a row without realizing it.
February 20th, 2009 at 11:00 am
Darby’s mom here. I have yet to do my 25 random facts, but here is a tidbit:
When I was little I used to think that bygones were creatures like cyclopses. So I thought the phrase “Let bygones be bygones” meant something akin to “Let sleeping dogs lie.” Like just leave those bygone (creatures) alone and everything will be alright.
February 20th, 2009 at 11:24 am
hi grace! i’m natalie from L.A. i’ve been following your blog for about 2 months. i was reeeally slow at work one day and read the entire odyssey of Maeby’s surgery. amazing. your photos make me love animals even more.
last february we rescued a street dog from south central. we took her to the vet and to our shock found out she was pregnant! a week later we helped her deliver her 6 healthy, happy pups. 8-weeks later we found them awesome homes. we kept the mom Pichu and one pup Tico.
my random fact (or at least my favorite) is that i am the little girl petting the goat with Janet in the opening credits of Three’s Company when they’re at the zoo.
keep up the amazing work!
February 20th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Teresa from Livonia, MI. My pup is Dex!
Random fact….I would pay to have a fountain pop machine in my house!
February 20th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
Hi-Oh!! I’m Andrew Lee from Southern California and I love your site and your work. It was your site and photos specifically that have inspired me to photograph dogs other than my own.
Thank you!
My dogs are Pookie a 6 yr Fawn Pug, and Pugoda a 4 yr Black Pug.
I have two weird random facts: Every business day I read my Google RSS reader, which tracks 35 different pet photographer’s blogs. They are all labeled by photographer’s name, business name, and location. I check it like a religion.
My other funny-weird random fact is once while staying at the “W” Hotel in San Francisco, a pretty trendy hotel, I ate the largest, most PERFECT chocolate covered strawberry EVER!! It was from a discarded room service food tray that was sitting in front of some random room. I walked by it and to my room, where I thought about it for 10 full minutes before I went back to go get it. I have never had a better one since nor have I eaten random foods that i don’t know where it came from since. Kind of gross and funny.

Hello Hello -=)
I’m Ashley, from North Hollywood.
I have an Australian Shepard named Chase (4), who will chase any toy you throw… for hours. His only defeat? The two Italian Greyhounds that moved in next door.
I have two cats, Mister Bonkers (4), and Bibu (2), Mister Bonkers and Chase grew up together, so they’re best buds. If you tell Bibu to “attack the doggie” she goes after Chase like she’s some kind of secret kitty agent trying to save the world.
Chase thinks he’s people, Mister Bonkers thinks he’s doggie, and Bibu…she acts more like a little mouse more than anything
Have a great weekend!!!!!!!

Hi Grace - It’s me Nicole.
I have a genius of a dog named Ella (whom you already know about) and a cat named Tuna who I lovingly refer to as “saggy bottoms.”
I once dressed up as Lydia from BeetleJuice and my costume really kicked ass!
February 20th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
Hi, Grace!
I’m Lois and I recently came across your blog! My husband and I are photographers and we enjoy the images that you create. We live in the Seattle area and are commercial photographers (who also do a lot of animal photography – domestic and wildlife).
A “weird” factoid about us is that we spend 24/7 with each other. I don’t know of many people that can do this with their spouse! We’ve been married for 25+ years and have been together for a total of 32 years. The best part: It keeps getting better!
Our “kids” are feathered – Casey, a Moluccan cockatoo and Zina, an Umbrella cockatoo, both very young at 10 years old.
Come visit our blog and say “Hi”!
February 21st, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Hello Grace! Look at all the stalkers who’ve come out of the woodwork! (;
My name is Chung, a wedding+portrait photographer in the SF area. I totally randomly stumbled upon your blog from somewhere (I don’t remember). My life has never been the same since. I heart your site and your photography!
Weird fact? My nickname is “Chunkie Love.” I dubbed myself this in high school because people (damn high school kids) kept calling me chunky peanut butter or chunky noodle soup or some other random chunky+food combo. Go figure. I still get called Chunkie even though my 5′, 110-pound frame doesn’t really scream “chunky.”
February 22nd, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Hi Grace, I’m Lori from Texas. We met briefly of Flickr and I’ve had you as a contact for a while now but just recently started following your blog. I have a old heeler mix named Texi, a Rhodesian pup named Fuji, a cat named Jo, 2 house rabbits named Ollie & Gigi. I was a veterinary surgical tech before becoming SAHM. I’m working toward starting my own child and pet photography business soon, I love your pet photos & hope to be as creative as you are.
Weird fact….once while working at the vet’s I was expressing a sedated cat’s bladder before surgery, unbeknownst to us she was in labor and a live newborn kitten fell on the floor….we quickly saved the baby kitty and the surprised owners happily took the baby kitty home with the momma kitty.
Keep up the great photography!

I’m Audrey, living in Evans, CO (about an hour north of Denver, CO and an hour south of Cheyenne, WY). I have two heelers, a red heeler named Rudy and a blue heeler named Cody. Though they have many nicknames: The Roo, Doody, Pooh Bear, Codeman, Codedodedoo, Cody Bear, etc…. I basically call them anything that strikes me to blurt out at the moment and they answer to everything.
Weird fact? I got my teeth knocked out during the first week of fastpitch softball practice as a freshman in highschool. I was catching without a mask and the batter fouled one up just high enough to miss my glove and catch me square in the mouth. Funniest thing was that about 2 pitches before that, my coach had warned me to put my mask on and I replied, “Don’t worry, I won’t blame you if I get hit in the mouth.”
February 25th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Well, I’ve emailed you a few times and you are hopefully going to be shooting my naked kitties pretty soon! I have never owned a dog, but hope to within the next 5 years or so? (Need to get a bigger place first). We are thinking either a Newfoundland or a Bichon Frise. Couldn’t be a bigger difference there, huh?
Random fact about me: I lived on a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico for three months for a marine biology internship when I was in college. I was 40 minutes from the nearest “city” - Mobile, Alabama. The island’s population was only about 1,000 people year round and there was no diversity - it was very weird, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Ahhh…to be 21 again…
February 27th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Hi Grace, I’m a portrait and pet photographer from San Diego and just came across your site the other day from ‘The Bark.com website. I love that magazine too! Congratulations on your cover shoot! I loved every one of your pet photos! They really made me smile and I needed that today! Such character in each one! It’s hard to stand out in world of so many talented photographers, but you’ve done that.
I never finished my 25 random facts on Facebook, but here are 2 anyway: I’m fascinated by bushy eyebrows and I will only sing in front of my kids and no one else! (They usually beg me to stop too!)
Oh and I have two boxers - Lulu - 7mo old, and Charlie, 2yrs.
Keep up the good work!
Amy Mansfield

I’m Nancy and HAVE commented a few times on your heart-warming blog and photography. I have a 4-year old Wire Fox Terrier, Bogie, and a two-year-old min German Schnauzer named Mulligan. We’ve never had two dogs before and can’t believe their playfulness and antics. They constantly entertain us.
I’ve never written my 25 random facts either - yuck! I didn’t graduate from college until I was 47 and didn’t become a pro photographer until the age of 56. It just takes me a while -
